Tolerance and forgiveness

76161_10151535270961258_623951629_n[1]Aisha reported: Whenever the Prophet r was given a choice between two matters, he would choose the easier as long as it was not sinful to do so; but if it was sinful he was most strict in avoiding it. He never took revenge upon anybody for his own sake; but when Allah’s Legal Bindings were outraged, he would take revenge for Allah’s sake. [Bukhari and Muslim].


General Meaning:

It shows that Islam is a religion of ease and tolerance except in the case of a sin.

–       Forgiveness and Forgiveness and tolerance is a reason for the brotherhood and friendship amongst Muslims.

–       We should take the Prophet as a model in his forgiveness, tolerance and patient. WWe should take the Prophet as a model in his forgiveness, tolerance and patience.

–       AA Muslim who forgives and tolerates will get a great reward from Allah.

–       Forgiveness and tolerance can be made Forgiveness and tolerance can be made in all cases except when it concerns the duties towards Allah.

–       Forgiveness and tolerance is not a weakness or defect but it is a willingness to get the rewards from Allah.

–       Silence towards evil is NOT a type of forgiveness and tolerance.

Warning against anger :

Abu Hurayrah narrated: A man said to the Prophet Muhammad r : “Advise me!” The Prophet replied: “Do not become angry.” The man repeated (his request) several times, and the Prophet said in each case, “Do not become angry.”  [Al-Bukhari].

المعنى الإجمالي:   

–       نهي الإسلام عن الغضب لأن نتائجه ضارة، وحذر منه لأنه من الشيطان، والمسلم لا يغضب الآخرين بغير حق.

 General Meaning

Islam has warned us against anger because it has bad consequences and forbid it because it is from Satan. The Muslim shouldn’t be angry with anyone unjustly.


     Insight and forbearance are good characteristics and whoever gets angry often will have much to regret.

Forbidding enmity and jealousy

عن أنس بن مالك 

 أن رسول الله 

 قال: لا تباغضوا ولا تحاسدوا ولا تدابروا وكونوا عباد الله إخوانا ولا يحل لمسلم أن يهجر أخاه فوق ثلاثة أيام. [متفق عليه

]. Anas ibn Malik that the Messenger of Allah r said: “Do not shun each other; do not ignore one another; do not hate one another, and do not envy one another, and be brothers, O servants of Allah. No Muslim is allowed to shun his brother for more than three days.” [Agreed].

المعنى الإجمالي:


تحريم التباغض والتحاسد والتدابر والتقاطع، والنهي عن أذية المسلم بأي وجه من الوجوه، لأن ذلك ليس من خلق المسلم، الحث على التآخي والتآلف بين المسلمين.

General Meaning:

It is prohibited to be jealous or to envy or to cut relations or desert one another. Also, it is forbidden to hurt any Muslim in any way because this is not from the ethics of Islam but all the Muslims are supposed to be like brothers to one another.

Umar ibn Abi Salama said, “I was a boy in the care of the Messenger of Allah r and my hand used to go all around in the plate. The Messenger of Allah r said to me: “Boy, say the name of Allah and eat with your right hand and eat from what is in front of you.” [Muslim]

المعنى الإجمالي:

–         قول بسم الله قبل البدء بالأكل، وإذا نسيت أن تقول في البداية بسم الله، فقل: بسم الله أوله وآخره، وكُلْ بيمينك، واشرب بيمينك، وإذا جلست على طعام فكل مما قرب منك، وقل “الحمد لله” بعد الانتهاء من الأكل والشرب.

General Meaning:

One should say ‘In the name of Allah’ before one starts eating, and if he forgot, then he should say ‘In the name of Allah in the beginning and in the end.’ And one should eat and drink with his right hand and when he sits to eat food, he must eat from what is in front of him. And when he finished, he must say:

–         ‘All thanks are due to Allah.’

– Whoever leads to anything good gets the reward of the one who follows him

The Messenger of Allah r said:

“Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to those who follow him, without it detracting from their reward in any way. And whoever calls to misguidance will bear the burden of sin similar to those who follow him, without it detracting from their burden in any way.”

General Meaning:

المعنى الإجمالي:

–       فضل الدلالة على الخير والحث عليه وأن ثوابه عظيم.

This hadith shows the significance of doing good and encouraging others to follow it. And whoever calls others to good will attain a great reward.

–       TheThere is a great reward for the one who leads others to good for he will also get the reward of those who follow him (without their reward diminishing in the least)

–       Islam has issued a strict warning against those who invite others to misguidance or innovations and also against the one who is reason to mislead the people.

Good words and Cheerful face

It is narrated by Abu Dharr that the Prophet r said:

“Do not consider any act of kindness insignificant, even meeting your brother with a cheerful face.” [Muslim]

عن أبي ذر                                                                                                                                                                                   قال: قال لي النبي

“لا تحقرن من المعروف شيئاً ولو أن تلقى أخاك بوجه طلق”. [رواه مسلم].

                                                                                                                                                       :المعنى الإجمالي       

يرشدنا هذا الحديث إلى أنه ينبغي للمسلم عدم احتقار ما يستحسن فعله شرعاً.

General Meaning:  

This hadith tells us that each Muslim should never consider anything insignificant from whatever Islam has encouraged us to do. So each person should meet his friends happily and with a smile because the look on the face of the person is a title for his heart because meeting his brothers with a cheerful face and smile will make them feel that they are loved and Allah will reward the Muslim for it.


Keeping ties of Kinship

The Prophet r said,

“The word ‘Ar-Rahm’ (womb) derives its name from ‘Ar-Rahman’ (i.e. Allah). So whosoever keeps good relations with it (womb i.e. Kith and kin), Allah will keep good relations with him, and whosoever will sever it, Allah too will sever His relations with him.” [Bukhari and Muslim]




                                                                                                                                                  المعنى الإجمالي

–         يحث الإسلام على صلة الرحم وتحريم قطعها ومن فضل صلة الرحم حصول البركة في العمر وسعة الرزق، وحفظ الصحة، والذكر الحسن بعد الموت، والذرية الصالحة، والتوفيق لطاعة الله، وحفظ الأوقات من الضياع والشعور بالسعادة والطمأنينة في الحياة.

 IGeneral Meaning:

slam urges us to keep good relations with the kith and kin and forbade us from severing the ties of kinship. The advantage of keeping good relations with the kith and kin is to get a blessing in age, increase in provision and protection of health. Also, a good remembrance after death, righteous offspring and Allah will make obeying His commands easy for the slave. Also, Allah will make the time beneficial and one will be content and will find tranquility in life.

Kindness to Parents

: بر الوالدين هو : الإحسان إلى الأم والأب ومساعدتهما وطاعتهما في غير معصية الله تعالى

Kindness to one’s parents :



 is to be extremely good to one’s mother and father, to help them and to obey them without disobeying Allah’s orders.

قال الله تعالى: {وَقَضَىٰ رَبُّكَ أَلا تَعْبُدُوا إِلا إِيَّاهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا} [سورة الإسراء آية 23].

Allah the Almighty said in Surah al-Israa, verse 23: {and Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honor.} 

وعن عبدالله بن مسعود  قال: سألت رسول الله  : أي العمل أحب إلى الله تعالى؟

Once Abdullah ibn Masood asked the Prophet r to tell him the deeds which Allah likes the most. The Prophet replied. `To offer prayers on time.’ He asked him to tell the second best. He was told `to be kind towards parents’. He asked him to tell the third best and the Prophet replied: ‘Jihad in the way of Allah.’ [Agreed upon].

1-            حق الأم والأب عند المسلمين يأتي بعد حق الله تعالى وحق رسول الله  .

The The parents’ right in Islam comes directly after Allah and His Messenger’s rights .

 الإحسان إلى الوالدين عبادة يدخل المسلم بها الجنة.

2-            Kindness towards parents is a worship that will make a Muslim to enter Paradise.

3-            The one The one who is kind to his parents, Allah will guide his children to be kind to him and Allah will bless his age and give him a great reward on the Day of Judgment.

4 – Patience :

الصبر هو: تحمل الأذى والشدة مع عدم الجزع، والرضى بقضاء الله تعالى وطلب الأجر منه سبحانه.

Patience :

 is bearing the harm and distress with out panic, and to be content with the will of Allah and to ask reward from Him.


قال الله تعالى: {وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الْخَوْفِ وَالْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍ مِنَ الأَمْوَالِ وَالأَنْفُسِ وَالثَّمَرَاتِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ الصَّابِرِينَ (155) الَّذِينَ إِذَا أَصَابَتْهُمْ مُصِيبَةٌ قَالُوا إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ (156) } [سورة البقرة] .

 Allah the Almighty said in Surah al-Baqarah, verse 156: {And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to the patient. Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: “Truly! To Allah we belong, to Him we shall return.”}

1-            يجب على المسلم أن يصبر على المرض ولكن عليه أيضاً أن يعالج نفسه ويذهب إلى الطبيب ويأخذ الدواء.

A Muslim must be patient in his sickness but at the same time he should seek treatment for his sickness by going to a doctor and taking medicine.

ويأخذ بالأسباب لقوله تعالى: {وَلا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ ۛ وَأَحْسِنُوا ۛ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ} [سورة البقرة آية 195].

Thus, he needs to take the means of curing himself. Allah said in the Quran in Surah al-Baqarah, verse 195: {and spend in the cause of Allah and do not throw yourselves into destruction and do good. Truly, Allah loves the good-doers}  

2-            يجب على المسلم أن يصبر على الفقر والجوع ولكن عليه أن يعمل لكي يطعم نفسه ويتخلص من الفقر. لقوله تعالى: {فَامْشُوا فِي مَنَاكِبِهَا وَكُلُوا مِنْ رِزْقِهِ ۖ وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ} [سورة الملك آية 15].

A Muslim should be patient in times of poverty and hunger, but he has to work to feed himself and try to get rid of poverty. Allah says in the Quran in Surah al-Mulk, verse 15:{it is He Who has made the earth subservient to you; so walk in the path thereof and eat of His provision. And to Him will be the Resurrection.}

3-            يجب على المسلم أن يصبر على أداء فرائض الإسلام مثل الصلاة في وقتها والصوم ويحافظ عليها ويطلب الأجر من الله تعالى لأنه سبحانه يقول: {إِنَّمَا يُوَفَّى الصَّابِرُونَ أَجْرَهُمْ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ} [سورة الزمر آية 10].

A Muslim should be patient in performing the pillars of Islam such as prayer, fasting, and he should protect them (.i.e. to not miss them) and to ask reward from Allah for it, because Allah said in the Quran in Surah az-Zumar, verse 10: { Only those who are patient shall receive their rewards in full, without reckoning.”}

4-            4- على المسلم أن يصبر ويبتعد عن المعاصي ولا يتبع خطوات الشيطان لأنه يدعو دائماً إلى الفحشاء والمنكر والاعتداء على الآخرين.

The Muslim should be patient in trying to keep away from sins and to not follow in the footsteps of the Satan because Satan always invites to obscenity and evil and to harm others.

5-            Patience in Patience in Islam doesn’t mean humiliation and surrendering to the oppressor. Instead patience is to be patient in trials and to try to remove the injustice and humiliation from the Muslims because the Muslim is precious. Allah said in the Quran in Surah al-Munafiqoon, verse 8: {they (hypocrites) say: “If we return to Al-Madinah, indeed the more honorable will expel there from the meaner.” but Honor, Power and Glory belong to Allah, His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites know not.} Also Allah said in the Quran in Surah Aal-Imran, verse 139: {so do not become weak, nor be sad, and you will be superior if you are indeed believers.}






 It is to render back to people all things that are kept as a trust with a Muslim, be it money or any object. Also, it should be returned back without any delay or damage to the property.

قال الله تعالى: {إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَنْ تُؤَدُّوا الأَمَانَاتِ إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهَا} [سورة النساء آية 58]. Allah the Almighty said in Surah an-Nisaa, verse 58: {Verily, Allah commands that you should render back the trusts to those whom they are due} [al-Nisaa: verse 58].

وقال رسول الله  : “آية المنافق ثلاث: إذا حدث كذب وإذا وعد أخلف وإذا اؤتمن خان”. [متفق عليه].

The Messenger of Allah r said: “There are three signs of a pure hypocrite: When he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is trusted, he betrays his trust.” [Agreed upon].

1- المسلم يرد الأمانات إلى أصحابها وإن كانوا غير مسلمين، لأن الله تعالى أمرنا أن نؤدي الأمانات إلى أهلها. 1

– Muslims should return the trusts to their owners even if they are non-Muslims, because Allah has commanded us to render back the trusts to their owners.

2- المسلم لا يكسل في عمله ولا يضيع الوقت لأن العمل أمانة يأخذ الإنسان عليه أجراً وعدم إتقان العمل مع القدرة على ذلك خيانة وغش. 2

– The Muslim is not lazy in his work and he does not waste time because his work is a trust for which he takes a salary. Thus, not doing the work in the best manner possible is a kind of betrayal and cheating.

3- كل ما أنعم الله به علينا من سمع وبصر وعقل وصحة ومال وأولاد، أمانات سوف يسألنا الله عنها يوم القيامة، هل حافظنا عليها واستخدمناها في طاعة الله، أم ضيعناها واستخدمناها في الشر؟ 3

 – All what Allah has blessed us with like our hearing, seeing, mind, health, money and children are trust from Allah and we will be asked about them on the Day of Judgment: Do we keep them safe? Do we use them in obeying Allah or disobeying him?


Allah the Almighty said in Surah al-Israa, verse 36: {Verily, the hearing, the sight and the heart of each one of those will be questioned}


2 – Honesty


 Honesty: الصدق هو: هو قول الحق وفعله وترك الكذب

It is to be true in words and deeds and to abandon lying.

قال الله تعالى: {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَكُونُوا مَعَ الصَّادِقِينَ} [سورة التوبة آية 17]. Allah the Almighty said in Surah at-Tawbah, verse 119: {O you who believe, fear Allah and be with those who are true (in words and deeds)} 

وقال رسول الله  : “إن الصدق يهدي إلى البر وإن البر يهدي إلى الجنة ولا يزال الرجل يصدق ويتحرى الصدق حتى يكتب عند الله صديقاً..”. The Messenger of Allah r  said: “Truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person…”

المؤمن صادق في كلامه فيقول الحق ولو على نفسه ويشهد بالصدق دائماً ولو على أهله لأن الصدق أمانة وجزاؤه الThe believer is truthful in what he says and he is true to himself and he bears witness for the truth always, even if it is against his own people,


1-    because honesty is a trust and its reward is Paradise.                    .

2-    ( والمسلم يصدق في عمله وبيعه وشرائه فلا يغش ولا يخدع ولا يكذب أبداً لأن الكذب والغش والخداع خيانة عقوبتها النار)

The Muslim is honest in his work, in his transaction and in his deals. He does not cheat nor deceive and he never lies because lying, fraud, deceit and treason are punishable by fire.
